Background of the Study

Telehealth has rapidly evolved as an essential tool in healthcare, offering a way to provide medical services remotely through digital platforms. In nursing education, the integration of telehealth into the curriculum can enhance students’ understanding of healthcare delivery in a digital environment. The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, recognizes the importance of incorporating emerging technologies like telehealth into nursing education to ensure that future nurses are prepared to work in modern, technology-driven healthcare systems.

Telehealth enables healthcare providers to connect with patients remotely, offering consultations, monitoring, and treatment without the need for in-person visits. For nursing students, learning how to use telehealth technologies is vital, as it enhances their ability to provide care in a variety of settings, particularly in rural or underserved areas where access to healthcare may be limited (Howard et al., 2023). Telehealth also offers opportunities for nursing students to practice patient interaction, assessment, and care coordination in a virtual environment, simulating real-world healthcare scenarios that require technological competence.

The integration of telehealth into nursing education is a relatively new development in many nursing schools. While some institutions have embraced telehealth as part of their curricula, there is limited research on how nursing students perceive this integration and its potential impact on their education and clinical practice. Understanding students’ perceptions of telehealth and their readiness to incorporate it into their future practice is essential for developing effective training programs that prepare nursing students to work in a telehealth environment.

This study aims to investigate nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth and its integration into nursing education at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and to assess how these perceptions may influence their readiness to use telehealth in clinical settings.

Statement of the Problem

Although telehealth is becoming an increasingly important aspect of healthcare, there is a lack of research on nursing students’ perceptions of its integration into their education and future practice. The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, has begun to incorporate telehealth into its nursing curriculum, but the extent to which students perceive this integration as beneficial or relevant to their education is not well understood.

Nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth could impact their attitudes toward using it in clinical settings. If students view telehealth as an unnecessary or ineffective tool, they may be less likely to adopt it in their practice, despite its growing importance in modern healthcare. Conversely, if students have positive perceptions of telehealth and understand its relevance to their future roles, they may be more likely to embrace it and use it effectively in their nursing careers.

This study will explore how nursing students at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital perceive the integration of telehealth into their education, identify factors that influence these perceptions, and determine whether their attitudes are aligned with the need for technological competence in modern healthcare.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth and its integration into nursing education at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.

2. To explore factors influencing nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth.

3. To evaluate the impact of nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth on their readiness to use it in clinical practice.

Research Questions

1. What are nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth and its integration into nursing education at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu?

2. What factors influence nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth?

3. How do nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth affect their readiness to use it in clinical practice?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students who perceive telehealth as a valuable tool are more likely to be ready to use it in clinical practice.

2. The level of exposure to telehealth training is positively related to nursing students’ perceptions of its usefulness.

3. There is a significant relationship between nursing students’ perceptions of telehealth and their willingness to incorporate it into future nursing practice.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, exploring their perceptions of telehealth in the context of their education. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the challenge of generalizing findings to other institutions or regions with different levels of telehealth integration.

Definitions of Terms

• Telehealth: The delivery of healthcare services through digital technologies, such as video consultations, remote monitoring, and online health education.

• Perceptions: The attitudes, beliefs, and opinions held by nursing students regarding the relevance and effectiveness of telehealth in their education and practice.

• Nursing Students: Students enrolled in a nursing program, preparing to become registered nurses.
